History of Good Shepherd Sisters and St. Philomena's School in Ballari

"DO WELL ALL THAT YOU DO"

The Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd, also known as the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, is a Catholic Religious Order and International Apostolic Religious Institute of Pontifical Right, founded in 1835 by our Foundress St. Mary Euphrasia in Angers, France.

Her zeal and enthusiasm would stop at nothing. St. Mary Euphrasia, being a visionary, sent Sisters in mission to far away countries including India, responding to the invitation of Bishop Charbonneau, a French Missionary of the Mysore Mission.

First Foundation in the Asia Pacific Region

In 1854, five Sisters—one German, two Irish, and two French—traveled from the Motherhouse in Angers, France, to India. This new foundation in India was the first in the Asia Pacific Region.

The Good Shepherd Sisters arrived in India at the port of Pondicherry on August 2, 1854 and then travelled to Bangalore on August 14, 1854.

Vision and Mission

Her Vision and Mission is still alive today, guiding the work of the Good Shepherd Sisters across the world.

The Good Shepherd Motto:

"One Person is of more value than the Whole World"

With this Motto, the Good Shepherd Sisters continue to share the agony of the marginalized and the vulnerable. Many of our Sisters live among them courageously, crossing socio-cultural boundaries and touching their lives.
